Following last weeks research on Censers I decided to expand on this research and do some concepting with a mix of 2D and 3D assets to produce and iterate on some different ideas.

Based on the Warhammer 40K Astartes reference that we felt would make for a really cool Censer I looked at some sci-fi mines and grenades as I felt they have interesting shape language and would reiterate the sci-fi elements in the scene.

I initially started by breaking it into the sphere element and the pipe elements that will emit smoke. Using these shapes I went into Photoshop to do some quick ideation and paintovers.

I feel there’s too much going on with some of these ideas but I do like the glowing elements however after getting some feedback It came to my attention that the pipe element looked a bit too much like a cup or plant pot so I went back into Maya to make some quick variations.

I much prefer the shapes of this one but will continue to iterate on the one that gets the most positive feedback. The right one got the most positive feedback so I continued to develop it and got to here.

Then the main censer bit here:

After UVing this asset I took it into ZBrush to do some finer details

Censer Emitter textured:

I tested some different pattern options for the Censers gold section which you can see below.

I asked feedback from Laura and we came to the conclusion that we liked this one the best, I changed the projection mode to cylindrical and the tiling a bit to make it completely seamless.

Here are some in Engine Shots:

Using a Niagra Smoke particle I had made in a previous project I tested out how some smoke would look emitting from the Censer and the Censer’s Emitter Pipes.

I need to work on the movement of the smoke and making it look more wispy rather than like clouds blowing around I also want to control the direction it moves a bit more.
